Know where your shipment is and whether it's still in range, while there's still time to act. GPS temperature data loggers record temperature and location together, and real-time models send both over cellular networks, alerting your team the moment a consignment drifts out of range or goes off route. Explore single-use and reusable GPS data loggers for pharma, vaccine and food shipments by road, air and sea, with full specs and indicative prices in INR. GPS temperature data loggers are also called GPS temperature trackers, real-time temperature loggers or cold chain trackers. Most send temperature and location over 4G or 2G networks, and some 4G/5G models record for up to 120 days.
What is a GPS temperature data logger?
A GPS temperature data logger records a shipment's temperature together with its location, linking every reading to where the goods were at that moment. Real-time models send both over 4G or 2G networks and alert you to excursions, route changes or tampering during transit.

A GPS temperature data logger is a device that records the temperature of a shipment together with its location. Every reading is linked to where the shipment was at that moment, so you can see not just that a temperature excursion happened, but where and when: on a highway, at a warehouse, at an airport, or during handover.
Most GPS temperature data loggers also record humidity, and many add light (to show when a package was opened), shock, tilt or tamper sensors. They're used for pharma, vaccine, food and other temperature-sensitive shipments where proof of condition and route matters.
| Feature | Real-time GPS data logger | Offline GPS data logger |
|---|---|---|
| How data is sent | Live over 4G/2G cellular | Stored in memory, read after the trip |
| Alerts during transit | Yes: SMS, email, app | No |
| Can you act mid-route? | Yes | No, only investigate afterwards |
| Typical use | Pharma, vaccines, high-value shipments | Damage and liability evidence, low-cost route proof |
| Running cost | Usually includes data or subscription | No connectivity cost |
Choose real-time if someone can act on an alert: call the driver, reroute, or move goods to a cold store. Choose offline if you mainly need proof of route and conditions after delivery, for example for insurance or carrier disputes.
Activate and pack. The data logger is switched on and placed inside the shipment, next to the product.
Measure and locate. It records temperature (and often humidity, light or shock) at a set interval and fixes its position by GPS, falling back to cell tower location indoors.
Transmit. Readings and location are sent over 4G or 2G networks to a cloud dashboard, typically every few minutes to every hour.
Alert. If temperature crosses a limit, the shipment leaves a set route or area, or the package is opened or dropped, your team gets an SMS, email or app alert.
Report. At the end of the trip, a report shows the route, temperature history and every alert, for quality release and records.
When the network drops, on remote highways or during flights, most GPS data loggers keep recording internally and upload the backlog once they reconnect.
GPS temperature data loggers are often confused with vehicle tracking systems. They solve different problems.
| Feature | GPS temperature data logger | Vehicle-mounted tracker |
|---|---|---|
| What it monitors | The consignment itself | The truck or reefer unit |
| Power | Internal battery | Vehicle power (wired) |
| Travels with the goods | Yes, across trucks, flights and warehouses | No, stays with the vehicle |
| Works for air freight | Yes, if airline approved | No |
| Typical extras | Light, shock, tamper, geofence | Door sensors, fuel, driver display |
| Best for | Pharma and vaccine shipments, exports, multi-leg routes | Own reefer fleets on fixed routes |
If goods change vehicles, pass through a warehouse or fly, only a GPS data logger travelling with them gives one continuous record. If you run your own reefer fleet, a vehicle-mounted tracker monitors every trip without packing a device each time.
Single-use GPS data loggers travel one way and aren't returned. They're pre-configured, easy for shippers, and suit exports and one-way pharma distribution where recovering devices isn't practical.
Reusable GPS data loggers are recharged and redeployed. They cost more per unit but less per trip on repeated routes where devices can be collected back.
Compare the cost per shipment, including the cost of getting devices back. For shipments that don't need live tracking at all, see USB temperature data loggers.
Battery life depends heavily on how often the data logger reports. Reporting every 10 minutes drains the battery far faster than every hour. Check battery life at the interval you'll actually use, with a margin for delays.
4G with 2G fallback gives the widest coverage across India, including highways and rural routes. For international shipments, check roaming support in your destination countries.
GPS is precise outdoors. Inside warehouses, aircraft holds and containers, data loggers fall back to cell tower or Wi‑Fi location, which is less precise. Check which methods are supported.
Look for adjustable temperature alerts, plus humidity, light (package opened), shock or fall, and tamper alerts. Geofence alerts tell you when a shipment leaves its planned route or reaches its destination.
Built-in sensors suit 2–8°C and ambient shipments. For frozen, dry ice or cryogenic shipments, choose a GPS data logger with an external probe rated for the temperature you need. Some models reach -200°C.
For pharma use, ask for a traceable calibration certificate. Some systems use exchangeable calibrated probes, so recalibration doesn't interrupt monitoring.
For air freight, the data logger must be approved by the airline, either meeting in-flight transmission rules or switching off transmission automatically during flight. Ask for the list of approving airlines.
Check that both you and your customer can view the shipment, that trip reports are created automatically, and whether an API is available for your ERP, WMS or TMS.
An IP65 or IP67 rating protects against dust and water on loading docks, in containers and on monsoon routes.

Pharma distribution: from manufacturer to C&F agents, distributors and hospitals, with full GDP records.
Vaccine cold chain: 2–8°C and frozen vaccine shipments where excursions must be caught immediately.
Air freight and exports: multi-leg international shipments that change hands several times.
Reefer trucking: chilled and frozen food, dairy and seafood distribution across India.
Clinical trial and lab samples: high-value, time-critical shipments that need location and condition proof.
High-value goods: consignments where theft, tampering or damage claims are a risk.
On this site, GPS temperature data loggers range from about ₹3,500 to ₹26,000.

A GPS temperature data logger records the temperature of a shipment together with its location. Real-time models send both live over cellular networks to a cloud dashboard and alert your team when temperature goes out of range or the shipment leaves its route. Offline models store location with each reading for review after the trip.
The terms are often used interchangeably. A GPS temperature data logger always records temperature with location. "Tracker" sometimes refers to vehicle-mounted fleet units that monitor a truck rather than the shipment itself. For pharma and multi-leg shipments, a data logger that travels with the goods gives one continuous record.
A normal data logger records temperature only and is read after the trip. A GPS data logger also records location, and real-time models send data live, so you can see where the shipment is and act on problems during transit instead of discovering them on delivery.
Yes, if the model is approved by the airline. Approved loggers either meet in-flight transmission requirements or switch off transmission automatically during flight and resume after landing. Always confirm approval before shipping by air.
It depends on the reporting interval and conditions. Reporting every few minutes may give days to weeks of battery life, while hourly reporting can stretch it to months. Check battery life at the interval you plan to use.
Yes. They keep recording temperature and location internally when there's no network, for example on remote routes or during flights, and upload the stored data once they reconnect. You won't receive live alerts during the gap.
Single-use GPS data loggers suit one-way shipments and exports where devices won't come back. Reusable ones cost less per trip on repeated routes where you can collect them. Compare the total cost per shipment, including device recovery.
GPS temperature data loggers listed on this site range from about ₹3,500 to ₹26,000. Single-use models cost less per unit, while reusable models with more sensors, longer battery life and airline approval cost more.
Most come with an embedded SIM and data for a fixed period. Reusable models may need a renewal plan, so check what's included before buying.
